Saisons and Sours

Today we head south into the province of Hainaut. This is ‘saison’ country, a farm ale produced during the winter months for consumption during summer.  We make a short stop at Brasserie Dupont, a farm brewery with a history that goes back to the 18th century.

Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos started homebrewing as a hobby in the early nineties. They started brewery De Ranke in 1995. What sets them apart from many other breweries is their use of  whole-leaf hops. Lunch will be at their recently renovated taproom, allowing you to try a fresh Saison de Dottignies (5,5% ABV) or XX Bitter (6% ABV).

Pico-brewery Alvinne was founded in 2004 by brothers-in-law Davy Spiessens and Glenn Castelein. Their mission statement is to deliver world class innovative beers, pushing the classical barriers away and this by only making use of malt ingredients, water, hops, yeast and the flavour of used oak barrels.

Overnight in Watou, where we stay at het Brouwershuis, the B&B on the grounds of brewery Sint-Bernardus. Dinner at a local restaurant right on the French border.
